Tea in the Sugar Bowl

Some brief overview of book

'Tea in the Sugar Bowl, Potato in My Shoe' (strange combination!) presents some rather zany poetry from Michael Rosen accompanied by some superb illustrations by Quentin Blake. Subjects covered are 'Breakfast Time', when the potato was found in the shoe, the cat was on the table eating somebody's bacon and the baby tipped cornflakes over his head, 'Messing About', which features Jumping John, Mad Mickey, Kicking Kirsty and Fat Fred, who all do bizarre things, and 'On the Beach', where a boy on the rocks is washing dirty socks (well, it rhymes) and a girl is sitting in chair while standing behind her is a big grizzly bear (well, it rhymes)! There are a couple of 'What if ...' sections, where children-sized helicopters and submarines are discussed, and a couple of more downbeat items, 'Feeling Ill' and 'Down at the Doctor's'.

In the former the patient is lying in the middle of the bed waiting for the clock to change while daydreaming and in the latter there is a fat black dog, a fat white cat and a fat red parrot in the surgery along with the patient - sounds like he made a mistake and went to the vet's place! Finally there is a fanciful section entitled 'If Beds Had Wings', wherein the bed transports its sleeper to far away Japan and to discover a castle hidden deep in a wood, and a section dealing with 'After Dark'. In the latter the sleeper feels safe in his bed while traffic hums outside, curtains shake and cupboards creak and he is able to twiddle his toes and hug his pillow - bliss and goodnight!
