GAMING CREATOR CONNECTION

Whether you’re currently working in the industry or aspiring to do so, here’s an opportunity for game developers!

Gaming Creator Connection

Returning this year, Comic-Con International is featuring the Gaming Creator Connection, an opportunity for game developers — whether currently working in the industry or aspiring to do so — to receive valuable advice, insights, and mentoring from seasoned veterans of the game industry representing diverse professional backgrounds.

The Gaming Creator Connection is organized and run by a professional game creator with 25+ years of experience, along with the participation of seasoned veterans from across the game industry. The GCC is a perfect opportunity to seek expert guidance in one of three core areas:

  1. Art/Design: Artists of all kinds (general, character, environment, UI, etc.)
  2. Narrative: Writers, narrative designers, editors, world builders, etc.
  3. Business: A range of topics pertaining to indie start-ups, funding, marketing, pitching skills, etc.

Participants will have around 15-20 minutes to speak with a mentor and will be able to rotate between mentors in their field of interest in order to maximize the amount of feedback.

The Details

Where:
Marina D, Marriott Marquis & Marina (See your Comic-Con quick guide for a helpful map)

When:
Saturday, July 23

Time:
1:00pm – 3:00pm

How to Participate

Applications are now open for individuals who would like to participate in the GCC. Please email the following information to programs@comic-con.org for a chance to participate.

  • First and last name
  • Email address
  • Primary field of interest* (pick one): Art/Design, Writing, Business
  • Are you currently a student? Yes/No
  • Are you currently working in the game industry in any capacity? Yes/No
  • Primary mentoring goal; i.e. what specifically do you hope to learn from the mentors?

*While we will likely have professionals with background in other areas beyond these three (e.g., programming, localization, etc.), we can’t guarantee their availability.

GAME PITCH REVIEW

Also returning this year is the Game Pitch Review. This pitch review will be conducted by a panel of professional game developers who will offer their invaluable advice and insight to those seeking to further their dreams of making their game a reality. Participants will have the opportunity to pitch a game for three to five minutes and then receive constructive criticism on the concept and your pitch. This session will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis and sign-ups will be taken on site for the 6 pitch slots.

To participate in the Game Pitch Review, you must be prepared before you sign up. Those not prepared will forfeit their pitch session. Preparation includes:

  • A well-practiced, 3-5 minute verbal pitch that clearly explains the game concept, how it’s unique to the marketplace, why it would be worth funding, etc.
  • Any hardcopy or digital visuals (images, video, etc.) that help illustrate the concept and viability of the idea (you must bring the device on which you will display the visuals).
  • Be imaginative in your pitch and be passionate; imagine you’re making a very quick pitch to receive funding for your idea.

The Game Pitch Review will take place on Saturday, July 20 from 11:00am to 12:00pm in Marina D at the Marriott Marquis & Marina. Sign-ups will begin at 10:00am.

Tech, Prep, and Last-Minute Checks

We want to make sure all of your tech is in line to have a smooth and easy Comic-Con 2023 Returning Registration experience.

Toucan Logo "Registration Update"

Password Check

If you haven’t logged in to your Comic-Con Member ID account for some time now, let’s say since Comic-Con Special Edition or WonderCon 2022, you may be prompted to update your password (see image below). We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have logged in fairly recently, we still recommend you double check that you can log in to your Member ID so that come the day of sales, you don’t have any delay in getting into the waiting room. If you’re eligible for Returning Registration, you’ll need to log in to your account to participate!

Email Check

To prevent any difficulties on the day of Returning Registration, log in to your Member ID account prior to October 15, and check under your name in the upper left hand corner. If you’re not using the most up-to-date email for yourself, you can update your email address under “My Account Information.”

Credit Card Information

To make sure that your check out process is effortless, we recommend you go into your Member ID account before October 15 and save your credit card information ahead of the sale. If you participate in Returning Registration and are selected for a registration session, you will have 15 minutes total to complete your badge purchase. Having your credit card information pre-saved is ideal and could save you a few precious minutes. For visual guidance in saving your card information, follow the steps below:

Approved and Tested Browsers

The Queue-it waiting room and badge registration system have been tested on the browsers listed below:

  • Firefox: Latest Version
  • Google Chrome: Latest Version
  • Internet Explorer: Version 11 Only
  • Safari: Latest Version
  • Microsoft EDGE: Latest Version

Before October 15, make sure that your browser is up to date. These browsers, having been tested, will generate the easiest and smoothest results. Additionally, we cannot guarantee your results should you use a browser not listed above.

Devices

We strongly encourage you to use a laptop or desktop computer. The badge registration system is not formatted for iPad, tablets, or mobile devices. Comic-Con is unable to guarantee that the registration system will behave as expected using a mobile device.

Power Saving Settings

To make sure that your computer doesn’t go to sleep while in the waiting room or registration process, please be sure your computer’s settings are changed so that your screen doesn’t go black mid-purchase! If for some reason you do get kicked out of the waiting room because your computer decides to take a nap, don’t worry, simply log back in to your Member ID account to rejoin the waiting room. You will be returned to the same spot in line as you were in before.

Don’t Refresh!

Resist the urge to refresh your browser! The Queue-it waiting room will automatically refresh every 30 seconds. Refreshing your browser in the waiting room may cause technical difficulties.

Comic-Con 2023 Returning Registration will take place on October 15. Take a moment to run through these checks and, if you’re eligible to participate, you’ll be fully prepared for the badge sale this Saturday! For more information, read through our Returning Registration page.

The Comic Creator Connection Returns to Comic-Con 2023!

Are you a writer with a great idea for a comic book series, but you can’t draw?

Comic Creator Connection Logo

Example Heading

Are you a writer with a great idea for a comic book series, but you can’t draw? Or maybe you’re an artist looking to illustrate an incredible story, but you can’t write. Perhaps you’re both looking for someone to collaborate with so you can jumpstart your careers in the comic book industry. At Comic-Con 2023’s Comic Creator Connection, you just might find each other!

Comic-Con is proud to host the Comic Creator Connection once again, a fast-paced networking event that puts writers and artists together to help them meet potential new creative partners. Here’s how it works: in two 2-hour sessions—on Thursday, July 20 and Friday, July 21 from 7:00–9:00 pm—writers and artists will sit down across from each other at a table (and by artists, we mean pencillers, inkers, colorists, etc.—all are welcome!). Then, in 5-minute sessions, you will talk one-on-one with each other about your ideas and skills. At the end of each 5-minute period, you will get up and move on to the next person. If you’re interested in furthering the conversation, you can exchange contact information. If not, then politely move on. Think of it as speed-dating, but for writers and artists!

You can sign up for the Comic Creator Connection online in advance by sending an email to programs@comic-con.org. Please indicate whether you’re a writer seeking an artist or an artist seeking a writer, and please specify which day you would like to participate (Thursday or Friday). Artists are welcome to sign up for both days, but due to the high number of writers who sign up, we ask that writers choose one day only.

There will be onsite registration, but space may be limited depending on how many pre-registered writers and artists attend.

(Please note: All participants in the Comic-Con Comic Creator Connection must have purchased a badge for the day on which they would like to participate.)

For those attending the event, please read the following information.

THE DETAILS
Where: Marina D at the Marriott Marquis
When: Thursday, July 20 and Friday, July 21 from 7:00–9:00 pm
Please note that space is limited, and if you do not pre-register, we may not be able to seat you.

WHAT TO BRING
Participants at previous events have benefitted the most from the Comic Creator Connection when they’ve come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

Writers:

  • 20 copies of a 1-page writing sample (see below)
  • Business cards (if you have them)
  • A pen or pencil to write with
  • A 2-minute (rehearsed) version of your pitch
  • Water bottle (you’ll be doing lots of talking

Artists:

  • 20 copies of a 1-page art sample (see below)
  • Your portfolio (you’ll have some room to spread out on the table)
  • Business cards (if you have them)
  • A pen or pencil to write with
  • A 2-minute (rehearsed) version of your pitch
  • Water bottle (you’ll be doing lots of talking)

THE 1-PAGE WRITING/ART SAMPLE
Many participants have expressed difficulty in remembering all the different people they met with during the Comic Creator Connection. The best solution is to give each person you meet something unique to remember you by.

We suggest you bring along a single-page sample of your work, complete with your name, contact information, and anything else you’d like a potential working partner to know about you. Remember, everyone will go home with a bunch of these, so brevity is a plus.

If you’re a writer, use this document to represent your writing style or the specific project on which you would most like to collaborate. Don’t write complete stories; just give them a taste. You may also want to use the space to tell prospective artists about your creative inspirations, favorite artists, preferred styles, etc.

If you’re an artist, use this art sample to give prospective writers a good idea of how you tell stories with pictures. Draw in some panels if you like. Don’t just show your favorite artwork; show them how you use that artwork to tell a story. You also might want to tell them about your artistic inspirations, favorite writers, preferred styles, etc.

This is a rare chance for you to meet a lot of people at one time—and possibly your next creative partner! So, bring your A-game. Be intentional, open, enthusiastic, and outgoing. Be generous with your own time and learn all you can from every person you meet.

Also, remember that we’ll have writers and artists at all stages of their craft, so please be courteous and professional and help everyone have a great experience.

BE ON TIME
This isn’t an ordinary Comic-Con program. Since creators are registered in advance, they will get priority seating. Any seats that are still open once the event starts will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

FREE PITCH REVIEWS
We’ll once again be offering free pitch reviews to help you get ready for the Comic Creator Connection. A pitch is simply a way to present yourself or your project to others. It is usually a brief speech designed to persuade your listener into supporting what you’re doing or what you’ve made. Most creators have no trouble coming up with great ideas for new comics, but they often struggle to speak clearly and concisely about those ideas to other people. Giving a good pitch is a vital skill in bringing your project to life. Fortunately, it’s also a skill you can learn and improve with practice—and Pitch Review is a great place to do that.

Pitch reviews will be conducted by Douglas Neff, a professional speechwriter, speaker coach, and host of the Comic Creator Connection.

This is not a panel. Instead, these are 3–5-minute individual coaching sessions for as many people as we can accommodate in the scheduled time. Spaces are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis, and observers are welcome.

Where: Marina D at the Marriott Marquis

When: Thursday, July 20, and Friday, July 21, from 5:00–6:00 pm

TUESDAY: ADA EARLY BADGE PICK-UP WILL BE IN LOBBY A

ON TUESDAY, JULY 18, ADA ATTENDEES PICKING UP BADGES ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO ENTER
THE CONVENTION CENTER FROM 1ST STREET AND HARBOR DRIVE

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS LOBBY A FROM ANY OTHER DIRECTION ON TUESDAY, JULY 18.

Comic-Con International is dedicated to serving all of its attendees. The Deaf and Disabled Services Department was established to offer a hand to visitors with special needs, including:
  • Badge pickup service (including child badges) for those with mobility issues
  • Disabled Stickers and Service Animal Stickers
  • Certified ASL interpreters at large panels and the Masquerade
  • A limited number of volunteer interpreters available for individual assistance
  • A limited number of wheelchairs for loan in up to three-hour increments on a first-come, first-served basis
  • A limited number of rental scooters available on a first-come, first-served basis
  • Special limited seating for some programming, events, and the Masquerade
  • A rest area for the disabled, the elderly, expectant mothers, and parents with small children
  • Comfort Rooms that can be used for nursing infants, administering medication, or as a sensory shroud for attendees with special needs
  • Those with mobility issues can request a runner to pick up ticketed giveaways from Program Premiums for you (at the Hyatt Hotel).
Other important things to know:
  • The elevators in Lobbies B, E, and H provide access to the Upper Level
  • The elevator in the lower bayside lobby at the rear of Hall B2 provides access to the Mezzanine, the Mezzanine Terrace, the Pavilion Terrace, and the Upper Level
  • Satellite RFID Badge Help Desks can be found in Lobbies A, D, and G
  • First-Aid is available in Lobby C
  • Lost and Found is in Lobby D
  • Coat Check is in Lobby E and F

Who to Ask, and Where to Look
  • For Deaf or Disabled Services information, ask at the booth in Lobby A.
  • For Deaf or Disabled Seating information, look for someone wearing a Disabled Seating hangtag in the lobbies outside the larger programming rooms
  • For Line information, ask someone with a Comic-Con branded lime-green polo shirt, but be aware that some line locations are not announced in advance.
  • For Autograph information, ask at the Autograph Booth in the Sails Pavilion
  • For Exclusives information see the exclusives portal, or ask at an individual exhibitor’s booth.
  • To find the time a panel or program will begin, and where it will be, look at the programming grid in your Quick Guide or on the Comic-Con App.
  • For more detailed information about an exhibitor, a program, or a guest, look in the Event Guide or on the Comic-Con App.
  • For hourly updated information regarding autograph and programming schedule changes or cancellations, check the “Schedule” Boards posted around the Convention Center.

If you are an attendee with disabilities, Comic-Con wants to make your experience as fun and as entertaining as possible, but there are a few limitations on what can be provided. For example:

  • Deaf and Disabled Services cannot guarantee any seating, autographs, exclusives, or giveaways. All event and program rooms have limited capacity as set by the Fire Marshal. Even though your badge is needed to get into all events, it does not guarantee you access to any event if it has reached its capacity. We do not clear rooms between events.
  • Programming rooms fill up quickly, and all seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no reserved seats. ADA seating may not be available if you wait until the last minute to get to the room. Please check the schedule and plan your day accordingly, keeping in mind the popularity of most events.
  • Be aware that the Hall H line may subject you to many long hours in the sun.
  • Most autograph signings are of a limited nature. It is a good idea to make arrangements to have someone within your group save a spot for you in line.
  • There will always be information that Comic-Con is not told about in advance, such as special guests in panels or at exhibitor booths.
  • We are unable to refrigerate medicines or any other perishables.
Read the Comic-Con Policies page here:

Where do I go if I need a wheelchair or scooter?

Mobility Source is located in Lobby A

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for loan, for up to 3 hours on a first-come, first-served basis with ID and a credit/debit card for the deposit (fee TBD)

A limited number of rental scooters are also available on a first-come, first-served basis

If you choose to transition from your crutches, walker, or wheelchair to a scooter/wheelchair, we can store your device

If you would like to reserve a rental scooter in advance, contact Mobility Source at (619) 234-9505 by July 8th.

If you have an issue with your rental scooter or loaned wheelchair on-site, call Mobility Source at (619) 234-9505

How do I request an Interpreter?
Requesting an ASL Interpreter for Panels

The largest panels (Hall H, Ballroom 20, Room 6BCF, Room 6DE, Room 6A, Indigo Ballroom, and the Masquerade) will already have ASL Interpreters scheduled. For a smaller panel, an interpreter may be requested at the Deaf Services desk in Lobby A.
As always, the scheduler will try to accommodate all requests.

Requesting an ASL Volunteer Interpreter for other needs

Also at the Deaf Services desk, you can request a volunteer interpreter to assist you with a variety of other needs for up to 3 hours. Some examples are; interpreting for autographs, helping find a line, assisting in the Exhibit Hall, or at other Comic-Con-sponsored areas.

If you are a daily volunteer or department volunteer and would like a volunteer interpreter to accompany you on your assignment, you may request one at the Deaf Services Desk.

We will do our best to accommodate your interpreter needs, but occasionally, due to limitations beyond our control, we may not be able to accommodate all requests.

Exclusives and Exclusive Autograph Signings
On the Exclusives Portal

To ensure everybody has equal access to exclusives and exclusive autograph signings, Comic-Con uses a randomized selection process through the online Exclusives Portal.

Watch the Toucan Blog and social media for announcements about the portal. When it goes live, Log in to Member ID, and click the link under the Exclusives Portal in the main menu. Follow the instructions carefully. Once open, participants with an eligible badge may sign up for the opportunity to be selected for access to shop for exclusives from participating exhibitors or for a chance to take part in an exclusive signing.

  • If you are randomly selected for an exclusive item, you will be emailed further instructions on when and where to make your purchases.
  • If you are randomly selected for an exclusive signing, you will be emailed a confirmation with a QR Code and further instructions on how and when to get your wristband for the signing that day.

Please note: Randomly distributing purchase-timeslot tickets eliminates the need to rush on-site. Participation is limited to the days you have a badge, and you will have a certain number of opportunities to enter for exclusives offered for each of those badged days. You can put all your requests into a single item, or spread them out. It’s up to you!

Special ADA wheelchair access points are at the discretion of the Exhibitor. The line itself must be ADA-compliant, but not every exhibitor will have a separate ADA line.

Please refer to the Comic-Con website and the Toucan Blog for more details.

Limited Autograph Signings
In the Sails Pavilion

During the show, the Autograph Area in the Sails Pavilion has to limit some signings due to popularity or time constraints. Wristbands are distributed through random drawings scheduled to begin each morning after the doors to the Exhibit Hall open. Each of the signings is listed on the Autograph Area’s online Limited Signings schedule.

To participate in a wristband drawing, please go to the indicated line where one of two random systems will be used:

  • You will either press the button on the randomization device to be instantly told if you are a winner; or
  • You will pick a ticket out of a container (the winning tickets will have a distinct stamp on the back).

Wristbands will be placed on all winners’ wrists immediately. The wristband will admit the wearer into the designated autograph line at the specified location and time. If you are not a winner, you may return to the end of the line to try again until all wristbands have been given out—one wristband per person, per signing.

For ADA: the Autograph Area can provide a volunteer placeholder to stand in the random drawing lines for wristbands and/or the limited autograph lines for you. You can only use one volunteer placeholder at any time and you must be present to take your place in line when it is your turn.

For more information, please ask at the Autograph Area Information Desk or refer to the Comic-Con website.

How do I schedule an ADA Hotel Shuttle to pick me up?

The ADA Hotel Shuttle (onPeak through the Comic-Con website)

For mobility-impaired attendees who reserved their hotel room through the onPeak/Comic-Con website reservation system and require special transportation, the ADA Hotel Shuttle operates between all official Comic-Con hotels and the Convention Center, by advanced reservation only, on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to the capacity of the vehicles. Shuttles are designed to accommodate a wheelchair. Passengers are allowed only one companion.

You must make reservations in advance by calling the Seat Planners ADA Hotel Shuttle Supervisor at (619) 510-6383 between 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, or visit the ADA Hotel Shuttle Information Desk located on the sidewalk outside the Lobby A doors, to arrange for an ADA Hotel Shuttle pick-up. When leaving a voicemail, please provide your name, phone number, hotel, a one-hour window for pick-up at the hotel, and a one-hour window for departure from the convention center. Voicemail reservations are not valid unless confirmed by the Comic-Con shuttle dispatcher.

Sorry, this service is only available to those who registered their room through onPeak, from the Comic-Con website.

The ADA Hotel Shuttle will operate during the following times:

Thursday     7:00 am to 9:00 pm
Friday          7:00 am to 9:00 pm
Saturday     7:00 am to 9:00 pm
Sunday        7:00 am to 7:00 pm

NOTE: The ending time is the last departure time from the San Diego Convention Center. The last shuttle departing the hotels going to the Convention Center will be approximately 30 minutes before the end time listed

The ADA Shuttle will drop off and pick up near the Lobby A driveway. You’ll find Deaf and Disabled Services inside Lobby A.

How do I get to Comic-Con Museum?

Museum Shuttle
The Museum Shuttle is ADA-accessible and runs between the Convention Center and Comic-Con Museum. To ride the Museum Shuttle, you must already have a ticket for Comic-Con Museum. Tickets for the museum may be purchased online or at Comic-Con Museum Booth #1714. The Museum Shuttle makes no other stops.

The Museum Shuttle will pick up and drop off on Harbor Drive between the Marriott and the Hyatt and runs from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM Thursday through Sunday

Additional Information

ADA Attendants
Some attendees with disabilities may need an attendant who supports and helps them with activities such as eating, using the bathroom, supervision, communication, or getting from place to place. An attendant is present only to assist the attendee.

IMPORTANT! All attendants will be required to purchase a badge either on-site or in the badge sale (the ADA does not require free admission for attendants).

Service Animals
Under the ADA, a service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability.

The ADA requires that service animals be under the control of the handler at all times and be harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work, or the individual’s disability prevents them from using these devices.

Comfort/Support Animals
The State of California ADA compliance laws only recognize certified, trained Service Dogs. The San Diego Convention Center follows all State and Federal ADA compliance laws and directions.

Comfort/Support Animals are no longer allowed. Only a trained Service Dog, as defined by the ADA, is allowed to assist and accompany a disabled owner.

Captioning
Comic-Con is not a cable operator, television broadcaster, satellite distributor, or multi-channel programming distributor and therefore is not required to caption. Comic-Con does not provide the content shown in programming rooms, and cannot offer closed or open captioning of content. While we welcome video content during panels to include captioning on a voluntary basis, that content is not required to be captioned by law. (Please see above: How do I request an Interpreter?).
